The Lead Balloon is a cozy, down-to-earth café tucked into the heart of Dunedin North on Malcolm Street. It’s the kind of spot that locals seem to keep coming back to whether they’re after a warm coffee to start the day or a relaxed mid-afternoon break. The vibe here is casual and welcoming, with a small but thoughtfully curated menu that leans into fresh, handmade food with plenty of vegetarian options and some gluten-free treats.

Inside, the atmosphere feels unpretentious and homey, making it a good place to settle in with a book or catch up with friends. The space manages to balance a laid-back feel without ever seeming sleepy, thanks to the friendly staff who know their regulars well and make new visitors feel equally at home. It attracts a mix of university students, locals popping in for their lunchtime fix, and workers grabbing a quick, satisfying bite.

The food offerings, like the cheese scones, various fresh salads, and the always popular brioche cinnamon buns, all underline a kitchen focused on quality ingredients and straightforward flavors. Sandwiches, from vegetarian to free-range chicken varieties, prove handy for a quick lunch, and the soup—often changing with the seasons—is known to be hearty and comforting. Sweet treats like carrot cake and the ginger oat slice provide just the right amount of indulgence alongside the well-made coffee, which is frequently mentioned for its consistency.

Best times to visit tend to be mid-mornings and early afternoons, when the café has a buzz from the regulars but isn’t overwhelmingly busy. There’s a sense that this is a community spot where people come not just for the food but for the ease of the experience—whether it’s grabbing a takeaway coffee or lingering over a meal. The staff are approachable and helpful, happy to provide quick tastings or talk through menu options, which adds to the welcoming feel.

All in all, The Lead Balloon suits anyone looking for a straightforward, quality café experience with food made by hand, good coffee, and a friendly, unhurried atmosphere. It’s a place where the kitchen’s care shows up in every dish, and where the people behind the counter genuinely shape the local charm.

Im genuinely impressed and in love with the food (and service here!)!! Food- I had an omelette wrap. There's shredded chicken in there. I dont know what sauce they use to hold it all in but mannnn, so good. I was thinking to myself, this is so smart. Technically no carb. I was in between minds for the soup but the owners said i could taste before committing to the order... its cauliflower and tomato. Mind-blown! Loved it. Service- Since i couldnt decide, the owners were so nice to reassure me its perfectly fine to wait for the soups to be ready, taste it and decide. She even brought a sampler to the table. Awesomeness. They were both so smiley and knew everyone. It was nice to watch them at work.

Great cafe. The people running the place are so kind and helpful. My whole family chose sandwiches, omelettes, and treats to enjoy. The gluten free cheese roll was a favorite and also the omelette!

Copy atmosphere, a wide variety of kai and excellent coffee. The ginger loaf was great according to my mate(He would've preferred a cheese scone which they didn't have) The staff were friendly and service was prompt. I've got to say not many coffee shops make a good mochaccino but at this cafe I had one of the best. Sitting outside on a warm under the PVC roof can get quite hot but opening the door to the street allows fresh air to come through.
